Description

The Sava Bohinjka is a beautiful alpine river which pours out of the Lake Bohinj, it flows through grand scenery before joining the Sava Dolinka near the small town of Radovljica. Brown trout, Grayling, and Rainbow trout, Huchen and the Danubian salmon (Hucho hucho) all thrive in the river.

The pebble and gravel bottom is rich in all types of insect food. The level of the Sava Bohinjka is regulated by Lake Bohinj and is usually very constant. The fish can be both selective and cautious providing a challenge to the true fly fisherman, many of whom fish solely on this river because of this, and because of the breath taking scenery. In the upper parts of the river brown trout abound to Soteska bridge. The Grayling is distributed throughout the river but the specimen fish are to be found in the lower reaches. In the deeper holes an ever increasing number of Danubian salmon have been observed each season. According to the Fisheries Research Institute the Sava Bohinjka must be considered as one of the finest rivers for this large fish. The choice of stretch depends on the season, the fast flowing stretches are best fished using wet fly or nymph. Large hatches of insects occur in June and both the Trout and Grayling become very active. In the height of summer the fish are exceedingly shy and are best sought in the currents and fast water stretches.

Fishing methods

Fishing is allowed by using  one fly rod and one fly only, barb less hooks should be used only.

Wading is the most common technique along streams and rivers. Hip boots are handy on small streams or in high season when the waters are low, but chest waders are needed on the large rivers. Felt-soled wading shoes or boots are recommended.
